Happy Thanksgiving & Fish Tales

November 24, 2016

Hello,
Thanksgiving, while not a true Belizean holiday, is celebrated by many in Belize.   It is a holiday enjoyed by my family and it gives us time to be together to enjoy.  It is also a time for us to reflect on the blessings and good things in our lives.  We have a lot to be thankful for ~ our children are all healthy and happy, grandchildren studying to be doctors and engineers and loving their choice of field and many other grands’ doing well in high school and elementary school.

Mike and I are also very thankful to have been a part of the Lodge for 30 years, getting to meet wonderful people and be a part of so many family vacations where lifelong memories are made.  We are also thankful to all of our travel agents, you the guest who have visited over the 30 years and a big thank you to our staff, the BRL family, who helps to make the Lodge experience special and unique.

With the start of the holiday season, we take this time to wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving, with hopes of good food and more wonderful memories with family and friends.
Warm regards,
Marguerite

Fishing Tales

Slam, anyone!  Eight Grand Slams were landed between October 21-28.  These included a 70 pound Tarpon and a Permit, with Snook and Bonefish being common to most slams.

Even though tides were generally quite high during most of September and October, Snook were caught most days and ranged in size from 4-12 pounds.  Some bigger Snook were hooked but lost on fly tackle too light for these mangrove escape artists.

Many Tarpon in the 30-75 pound class were jumped and a fair share were landed.  Many smaller Tarpon were jumped and landed in the Rivers, Cayes and Mangrove Channels and Creeks.

Schools of Bonefish were found in the usual areas and many were landed including 10 and 15 in one day by two anglers.

Permit as usual were the most difficult to hook and land but several anglers got their first Permit experience, and have promised to return to improve their score.

Lots of Barracudas, Snappers and Jacks and a few Lookdowns were also caught.

The months of September and October are in the so called “slow season” in Belize.  “Slow” because of low tourist traffic to this area as it is still high season for fishing and vacation travel in the USA and Canada.  Many travelers are concerned about traveling to this area as the hurricane season includes September and October, but we have had very few hurricanes here in the past few years.  The Category One hurricane that hit here on August 3 only caused one day of lost fishing.  Modern weather forecasting systems also give us adequate time to advise travelers of possible storms. The “slow season” months are very productive times here at BRL so we encourage you to join the few other anglers that are here at that time.

WestJet Airlines now operates twice a week on Wednesday and Saturday, connecting passengers between Belize and Toronto, Canada.Copa Airlines and Avianca also connect Miami and Central and South America to Belize via Panama. Along with United Airlines, Southwest, Amercian Airlines and Delta, there are many options for getting to Belize.
Many flights arrive in Belize early enough for anglers to fish an almost full day at BRL since we are so near to the Belize International Airport.  Late outbound flights also afford our guests an almost full day of fishing on their departure day.

We are looking forward to our upcoming “high season”, so please make your reservations early so you can book your choice dates.
Best regards,
Mike Heusner
