BRL, Frontiers & “Bonefish & Tarpon Trust” Tagging Challenge

Dear Friends,

In 2012, we are looking forward to a few things, and the first one being the arrival of the large migratory Tarpon – when are they going to show up in Central Belize (normal years, by mid February).  In December 2011, we also had about six bonefish over 5 lbs landed, the largest being about 7 lbs and while this is not noteworthy in northern bonefishing places, for Central Belize, these are big, and hope that in 2012, we continue to see these biggies along with our normal bones.

We have a few exciting weeks planned during the upcoming season.  Dr. Ault, the head of the tarpon tagging study, will be fishing with us in March to try and satellite tag a few of the big migratory tarpon.   We have tagged 5 fish over the years, however, keeping the tags on to produce information has been the challenge, hopefully 2012 will be a better year.

Dr. Adams cannot return in May, but Kathy Guindon, Ph.D., will join us to help host the inaugural Bonefish and Permit Tagging Challenge in May, where we will be catching Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon to conduct and support research!  This week is being booked exclusively by Frontiers.  More information on this below.

John Irwin will be returning with another group in April 2012 – looking for the big tarpon and anything else that will take a fly.

The Becks will also be making a return hosted trip in May, 2012.  If you are interesting in joining their trip, please contact Denise Schreiber at Frontiers.

Fishing with Larry will also be hosting a trip in June 2012.  This group is a combination fishing and eco-tour group.  We look forward to seeing you all soon,

Best regards,

Mike & Marguerite

First Annual Belize River Lodge Bonefish and Permit Tagging Challenge

The Bonefish and Tarpon Trust (BTT), Belize River Lodge and Frontiers Travel are pleased to announce the inaugural Belize River Lodge Bonefish and Permit Tagging Challenge to be held May 12-18, 2012. Anglers participating in this special research event will spend plenty of quality time fishing and will be rewarded with great memories and the knowledge that they have made a difference in conservation—all while staying at one of the Caribbean’s best fishing lodges. There will also be a number of chances to win new gear donated by top manufacturers for this departure.

During this trip (which is exclusively offered by Frontiers) we plan to tag as many bonefish and permit as possible with “spaghetti tags” allowing us to follow their growth and migrations. The information collected is critical in the effort to help conserve and enhance this amazing fishery. In addition we will place at least one satellite tag on a big tarpon.

BTT scientists will be on hand to discuss and teach tagging and fish handling techniques and to answer questions about BTT’s research and conservation efforts. A presentation of recent scientific findings about our target species will be presented one evening. This will be a great opportunity to swap stories and have a chance for a one-on-one talk with a BTT scientist to really get into the “why” and “how” of bonefish, tarpon, and permit biol¬ogy—and angling. Prizes will be awarded on the final evening to those who tag the most/largest bonefish and the most/largest permit.

Fishing opportunities at Belize River Lodge are second-to-none. The lodge was one of the hosts for the BTT television show “Buccaneers and Bones” and is one of the top locations in the world for catching IGFA registered Inshore Grand Slams and Super Slams.
