Long Caye – One year in quick review

BRL’s Long Caye destination has been opened for a little over a year, and while the name goes back and forth between Outpost and Island Resort, it has been a success.   Guests have enjoyed staying on their private island being catered to by BRL’s attentive staff, still with the old world charm of Belize River Lodge.  Amenities include 24 hr electricity provided by a 20 kw generator with a 6500 back up, hot/cold shower, daily housekeeping, all meals provided by your cook and one of the most beautiful settings overlooking the Barrier Reef in Belize.

Anglers have enjoyed fishing the flat right in front when weather suited and fishing many of the nearby flats for tarpon, bonefish, permit and snook.  Early morning blind casting at Long Caye’s channel jumped large tarpon, heading back to Long Caye for a 9 am breakfast – a truly enjoyable way to get the day going.  Other guests preferred to sleep in and start with their 7 am breakfast and then go out to sight fish the flats.

Lunch was determined on a daily basis by guest and guides and the cook either made a boxed lunch for a full day on the water or everyone returned for a full light lunch.  Aretha was ready and waiting with salbutes, quesadillas or spaghetti and meatballs; while fresh lime-ade was a cool and delicious addition to all meals.

While fishing was the main attraction for most guests, some guests who returned to the Island Resort for lunch took a siesta after lunch then went back out, fishing until the evening, arriving back in time for appetizers and dinner.  If guests left and fished the entire day, they returned about 5 pm for a little relaxation before appetizers and dinner.

The guides and crew help to make your time on Long Caye one that is fishing filled in a relaxing atmosphere.

One guest said, “what’s not to like:
1.    Your own island resort
2.    Being catered to by friendly people
3.    Clean with fresh running water and electricity.
4.    No phone, no e-mail, get-away- from-it- all vacation.
5.    Fishing, fishing, relaxation and more fishing.
6.    Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit, Snook
–    ‘Cuda’s, Snapper, Tripletail, Ladyfish”
