Maya 2012 Fishing at Belize River Lodge

DECEMBER 23, 2012 IS NOT THE END OF THE MAYA WORLD, or the end of our Fishing World; it is just the end of a long time-cycle in the Maya Calendar.

he Hollywood blockbuster “2012” depicts the “end” of the Maya calendar as a cataclysmic event and the spark of a global calamity.  Maya elders and Maya archaeologists agree the Maya calendar does not predict the end of the world.  The Maya calendar, like ours, had cycles similar to our weeks and months as well as years.  The Maya “Long Count” is the name given to the part of their calendar that kept track of long periods of time similar to our years and centuries and millennia. The Maya baktun, only one of their many periods of time, is 144,000 days, and is approximately 394.25 of our “years.” Thirteen was a significant, sacred number for the Maya, and it is the 13th baktun that ends around Dec. 23, 2012.

It is not the end of the world; it is actually the start of the 14th baktun.  So the end is also a beginning and a time for renewal. Like the Mayas you too can mark December 23, 2012 on your own calendar, as a time for renewal!

To commemorate this historic occasion, BELIZE RIVER LODGE is offering SPECIAL COMBINATION MAYA ARCHAEOLOGY AND FISHING TOUR PACKAGES for fishermen and their non-fishing friends and relatives.

BRL’s unique location and our many years of tour experience naturally afford our guests very convenient combinations of Maya tours and fishing packages.  Many historic and popular Maya sites in Belize are easily accessed from the lodge and include:  Altun Ha, Lamanai, Xunantunich, Cahal Pech, Caracol, Chichenha Maya Pottery Cave, Actun Tunichil Muknal, and the Maya Jade Museum in Belize City.  These include full and half day tours.
