2019 BRL Office Memo & “2 for 1” Special

Belize River Lodge opened in the early 1960’s and was owned and managed by Vic Sr & Betty Barothy. Vic & Betty were the first to organize sports fishing and train flyfishing guides in Belize. Mike & Marguerite managed the Lodge (known then as KCS – Keller Caribbean Sports) from 1980 to 1982 continuing to train both guides and hospitality staff. Mike & Marguerite are the fourth owners of the Lodge, purchasing the Lodge in 1986 and their onsite management since 1986 has kept a standard worldwide in sports fishing and hospitality. Belize River Lodge is still involved in training guides and hospitality staff and are fully involved in the protection of our flats and fishery.

Belize wildlife and nature

Marguerite is updating the Lodge and her, Karen and Debbie have sent a little report of the changes while keeping the Colonial historic lodge overtone intact.

2019 is going by so quickly and here we are in August already. This year so far we have not had a lot of rain and the river remains green and clear. The trees are flowering and the mango trees in the backyard are still providing delicious fruit. The birds, agoutis, tapirs and howler monkeys are having a feast. The birds and monkeys drop their mangoes after picking a hole or taking one bite out of it. The food chain continues at night as these neighbors of ours – the tapirs, agoutis and other nocturnal animals, come to feed on the fruit that has fallen. Because the rains are late it also means that the fruit are very full, sweet and delicious to eat.

Guests and staff have been enjoying the mangoes in many different ways. The cooks have been preparing mango chutney, mango sorbet, mango cheesecake, mango crumble and of course, fresh mango a’la off the tree. The pineapples, cantaloupes, watermelon and other local fruit are also very sweet right now.

Since everyone has caught the fever to experiment, we have also been sampling different types of lunches and have been having a lot of fun doing this. Hopefully we will be able to serve you some of these new delicious lunches and desserts on your next trip to Belize River Lodge.

Our guests are now able to keep in touch with the world, much easier, on our recently installed WIFI in all the guest rooms. The Lodge porch and dining still have Wifi access, but you can now enjoy your internet in your air conditioned room also. Don’t forget to come

down and enjoy the comradery on the main Lodge porch.

While everyone is busy hustling and bustling, we at Belize River Lodge are doing the same catching up with repairs and maintenance. Our newest watchman, Milky, a rescue kitty has settled in comfortably and chief of security, Lucky Boy, is making his adjustment to this new

addition to his force.

Since the rivers are still green and clear, our guests have been finding tarpon in the rivers and also in the mouth of the river. They have also been hooked, jumped and landed in the channels near to Long Caye and Gallows Point. The saddest catch was a small tarpon that our resident crocodile caught and brought up onto the boat ramp to feed on. I guess we will have to put a sign to make crocodiles be aware that tarpon are catch and release only.

Several other fish have been caught and landed and everyone has had a lot of fun catching such a wide variety of species. However, we will leave that for Mike’s fishing report, soon to be emailed.

We hope to see you soon and we can be reached toll free at 1-888-275-4843 or by email.

Warm regards,
Marguerite, Karen & Debbie
